GM Racing/Team Silverado Pre-event Notes And Quotes: Kansas
Dennis Setzer on Kansas Speedway:
“Kansas Speedway is a great track. It is very smooth and wide with room to race and pass. The weather shouldn’t be too bad there; I think they are predicting 90 degrees. As hot as that sounds, it is much better than 110- degree heat we have raced in at previous events. We are taking a truck that is a past winner to Kansas. This truck has really brought us good luck in the past. As for Morgan Dollar Motorsports and myself, Kansas Speedway has been great to both of us. We have always qualified well there and finished inside the top-three. ”

Houston Back in the Saddle Again
After a one week hiatus, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Andy Houston finds himself singing the familiar refrain from a famous Gene Autry song, "I'm Back in the Saddle Again." Houston returns to the wheel of the No. 2 Team ASE/CARQUEST Dodge for this Saturday's truck series race at Kansas Speedway. NASCAR veteran Jimmy Spencer piloted the Ultra Motorsports entry last week at Milwaukee while Houston raced the No. 59 Harris Trucking Dodge.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 played a major role in Mike Bliss’ drive to the 2002 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship. Bliss won the race when Rick Crawford (No. 14 Circle Bar Motel & RV Park Ford) suffered a freak mechanical failure while leading four laps from the finish. Crawford, who wound up 12th, lost 43 of the 46 points by which he lost the title.

Kansas could send Hmiel to Victory Lane
If history has a way of repeating itself, Shane Hmiel (No. 15 Whitaker Farms Chevrolet) figures the third time has to be the charm. Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway has produced the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ two youngest winners – Ricky Hendrick in 2001 and Jon Wood (No. 50 Roush Racing Ford), each at 21 years of age.

Rained Out Qualifying Puts Setzer in Front
As a result of periods of torrential downpours, both Friday morning NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series practice sessions and qualifying have been cancelled. The 167-lap, 250-mile event will be lined up by 2004 team owner points putting Dennis Setzer, #46 Chevrolet Silverado in the number one starting position for Saturday afternoon’s race.
“This is the first time I have been the points leader and in a position to start the race from the pole as the points leader. It is a tribute to the quality of this Chevy Silverado Morgan Dollar Motorsports team. While we aren’t focusing on anything but one race at a time, it does feel pretty good not only for myself but the entire team.” Setzer continued, “We are honestly hoping for no practice. We feel like we are ready to unload and go fast right now. We have a good pit selection and Danny Gill (crew chief) always does a good job on the box. He has a great place for us to have good pitstops when we come in during the race.” NASCAR is considering a mandatory Yellow to check for tire wear, “I don’t think we will need one here. This is such a smooth track. It is unique from any other track we have on our schedule. It is much like the track at Chicago, wide and smooth. I don’t think tires or anything else will be a problem here, I think we need to just unload and go race.” (TruckSeries.com Photo)
No. 74 Team Chick Chevrolet Lands Sponsor SKCE Electric for Kansas
Team Chick Motorsports and their new driver Eric Jones will make their 2004 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut this weekend at Kansas Speedway. Carl Edwards Survives Early Crash to Win at Kansas Speedway
Carl Edwards recovered from a first-lap scrape with the retaining wall to win the O’Reilly 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Kansas Speedway. Edwards, from nearby Columbia, Missouri, made several pit stops to repair the damage before stopping on a late race caution flag for new tires. The new tires made all the difference as he charged from deep in the pack to take the lead with 20 laps to go and stretched the lead after a late-race restart to take his fifth career NCTS win. Edwards Scores Popular Kansas Win
Carl Edwards in the No. 99 Superchips Ford outlasted the competition to win the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway. Edwards scored his fifth career victory and second win this season. Edwards overcame a lap one brush with Dennis Setzer that put the driver back to the 33rd position and a record-setting caution-filled race to give Ford their third win of 2004. The trucks took the green flag at 3:31 pm ET and wasted little time conjuring up a couple of cautions. Championship point leader Dennis Setzer, leading the pack in his No. 46 Chevrolet got loose heading into the first corner on lap one, getting into second-place point sitter Carl Edwards. Edwards dropped back hoping to catch a caution and the 2003 NCTS Rookie of the Year didn’t have much of a wait. (High Sierra Photo)
Carl Edwards Press Conference: KANSAS
“It’s unbelievable. I’d be lying to you if I told you I didn’t cry after the checkered flag. I grew up in Columbia, Mo., and raced out of my dad’s old Volkswagen shop and then out of my mom’s garage when he kicked me out of there. I just never in a million years thought that I’d get to race here, so to win here and see that crowd’s reaction was unbelievable. I thought there was something wrong with my truck when I was pulling down there to stop and do a back flip because I heard this noise. I shut the engine off and it was the crowd, so that’s pretty unbelievable.”

Reutimann finished 29th in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 after completing 101-laps in the 167-lap NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event.
'Worst to First' - Edwards Wins Wild One in Kansas
For the second week in a row, Carl Edwards thought he’d thrown away a very good chance to win a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. Edwards, who tried to knock down the frontstretch wall while battling for the lead June 25 at The Milwaukee Mile, was not quite two turns into Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 before his Superchips Ford was in Kansas Speedway’s outside barrier after a tangle with pole starter Dennis Setzer. NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Notes: KANSAS
Despite finishing a season-worst 25th in Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway and giving back nearly all of a 131-point championship lead, Dennis Setzer is on-track to become the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ No. 3 money winner. Setzer, who trails Ron Hornaday Jr. by $9,715 on the career money list, must only start Saturday’s Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway. The Newton, N.C. veteran has won $3,070,138 in 152 series starts. That’s not far behind the $3,135,757 won by second-ranked Joe Ruttman.

Post-race inspection revealed that Edwards' #99 roof height was too low but no announcement has come from NASCAR regarding any penalty for the rule infraction.

Crawford Lands Fourth Top-Five Finish of 2004
Mother Nature placed a spell on the Kansas Speedway Friday canceling practice and qualifying as teams prepared for Saturday’s running of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series O’Reilly Auto Parts 250, leaving many teams to guess on a setup for the 167-lap event. For Rick Crawford, driver of the #14 Circle Bar Motel and RV Park Ford, his three races of experience led him in a general direction, one that proved to pay dividends as he scored his fourth top-five of the season.
Hamilton Finishes Second in Kansas
Square D driver Bobby Hamilton led the most laps before finishing second in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway on Saturday. His fourth top-five finish helped Hamilton close the gap in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points battle to leader Dennis Setzer, who he is only trailing by 61 points.

Wimmer Improves Career-Best Finish in Kansas
Sometimes the best finishes aren’t the prettiest ones, as NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver, Chris Wimmer, discovered during the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway Saturday. Despite having a truck that only had high gear due to a transmission failure early in the race, the Wisconsin native was able to take the checkered flag 18th thanks to using his head behind the wheel and avoiding the wrecks that brought out a record 10 caution flags.
Musgrave runs into trouble in Kansas
Ted Musgrave earned five bonus points for leading a lap early in the race at Kansas Speedway on Saturday, but got caught up in an accident in Turn 2 on Lap 36, preventing a top finish for the No. 1 Mopar Dodge Ram. The team had hoped for a repeat of their hard-earned victory at the Milwaukee Mile on June 26.
Cut Tire Deflates Hmiel's Shot at Kansas Victory
Shane Hmiel in his 10th start as the driver of the No. 15 Billy Ballew Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series once again was close to his first victory in a major NASCAR Touring Series event. Hmiel while in the lead in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway cut a right front tire, brushed the wall and end his chances of victory.
Skinner Wheels to 12th in Kansas
It looked as though it might have been a repeat of the thrilling last-lap battle with Bobby Hamilton at Atlanta. But instead of sliding for the win, Skinner went for a wild ride through the infield grass at the O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 attempting to avoid a collision after Terry Cook spun in turn 4. And that was only lap 80.
Kvapil Reels in Top-10 at Kansas
Reeling in his second consecutive top-10 finish, Kvapil gave credit where credit was due following the O'Reilly Auto Parts 250. From its first laps in practice to the wave of the checkered flag, the No. 24 Line-X Tundra was hot on the track - and smoking under the hood.
Kansas Kind To Kvapil - Not To Lester
Two Toyota Tundra drivers, Travis Kvapil and Bill Lester, were battling for top-10 finishes in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway, but only one registered a top-10 finish, while the other went home disappointed
Diary of a Champion: It's Gettin' Hot in Here
I think everyone started talking about the Kansas heat in Daytona this year. Going to that track is like a Catch-22. Everyone hates the heat but looks forward to seeing so many dedicated fans braving the weather. It's always one of the best turnouts of the year. But as usual, the most heat came from the competition on the track - and another unlikely spot - the seat of my pants. It was anything but hot on Friday when the team woke up to grey skies and rain over the speedway. During the rain delay, our teams waited out the weather in the haulers hoping for a chance to get some practice in and qualify since everyone was excited about the trucks we brought to Kansas. Our truck had performed really well at a recent Chicago test, and I was confident about my chances at getting my first pole of the season... (Ronda Greer Photo)
